The Razzies 2011 Nominees Announced

Before I get to the Razzies I need to ask: why are people still watching the Oscars? The Oscars were only semi-interesting in the past, and that was before we had 200 cable channels, streaming movies, iPhones and the internet. There used to be nothing else to do on a Sunday, and even then most people didn’t sit through the entire snoozefest.

The Academy Awards are not only a dinosaur like late night TV, but they’re so predictable. Entertainment Weekly accurately predicts the nominees and winners one year before the next year’s contenders are even released in theaters. Even the Super Bowl still has a few surprises each year. What fun is watching the same people giving the same people an award every single year? It’s like watching the Special Olympics.  YouTube and bloggers have proved we don’t need Hollywood to entertain us. Antoine Dodson and that Nyan Cat deserve an award. Not horrible movies about horses. What the fuck is the deal with Hollywood and horses?!

The Razzies unfortunately have gotten just as bad as the Oscars. Every year you can expect the latest Michael Bay movie and Twilight film to be nominated. We get it, Michael Bay and teen vampire films suck. How about freshening up the awards and nominating something new? Unlike good movies, there are A LOT of bad movies each year. Give someone else a chance! Plus, you know the people voting didn’t even watch a Twilight film. Sandra Bullock proved that with All About Steve.

This year’s nominations were a little better. Adam Sandler probably did deserve the 11 nominations he received for Jack & Jill, and Sarah Palin (Sarah Palin: The Undefeated) is a new addition to the Razzies roster. And I guess it’s kind of funny that The Hangover Part 2 was nominated for being “both a sequel and a remake.” But what was the point of introducing the new category “Worst prequel, remake rip-off or sequel” if the same movies are going to be nominated for Worst Picture?
