Trailer Review: Evil Dead (2013, Dir. Fede Alvarez)

The Evil Dead

I know we talk a lot of smack about remakes. And I had to say, after hearing that The Evil Dead was going to be remade I wasn’t sure what to expect. Of course I had my misgivings about it… the movie was going to be terrible, a waste of time, etc, but after a couple of people mentioned the trailer to me, I finally sat down and gave it a try.

Surprisingly, the trailer gives me hope. The opening few moments actually gave me chills, and the overall feel of the trailer seemed very grim indeed. Many of the shots are reminiscent of the original, yet bring their own take on to the tale we all know so well. I’m excited to see where the film will conform to the original, and where it will break away into its own retelling. After all, the original Evil Dead is so iconic, simply creating an exact replicate after all these years wouldn’t bring much to the table.

The makeup is astounding and looks like it’s mostly practical effects, and as is to be expected, most of the clips are completely revolting (especially when she licks the razor blade. There’s just something about tongue mutilation that really gets to me). If the rest of the film is as intense as the few scenes we’re able to see here, I’m sure we’ll all be in for one wild ride. It will be interesting to see what a 2013 audience, which is so used to over the top effects and cheap scares, will think of the Evil Dead remake.
