Antonio Banderas has signed on to play Pablo Picasso in the upcoming Carlos Saura film, 33 Dias. The film is set to focus on the emotional and mental turmoil experienced by the painter as he completed his masterpiece mural, “Guernica.”
The title 33 Dias refers to the length of time Picasso spent creating the mural, which was meant to encapsulate his reaction to the destruction of the Spanish town during the Spanish civil war. Saura has expressed that the film will focus on how the painting of the mural provided a form of salvation for the artist dering a time of personal crisis.
Banderas said of his character in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais, “[Picasso] is a character that has pursued me for a long time and I always rejected. He deserves a lot of respect because I am from Malaga, and I was born four blocks from where he was born,”
The French and Spanish language shoot is set to begin next summer in Guernica and Paris.
