Saura has expressed that the film will focus on how the painting of the mural provided a form of salvation for the artist dering a time of personal crisis.

Banderas said of his character in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais, “[Picasso] is a character that has pursued me for a long time and I always rejected. He deserves a lot of respect because I am from Malaga, and I was born four blocks from where he was born,”

The French and Spanish language shoot is set to begin next summer in Guernica and Paris.
